The next morning, the sun was shining and the snow was starting to melt away from the forested valley the airship had landed in. Kai and Gerda soon left, riding off on their reindeer Bae, while Daron, Larkin, and Penelope went out to inspect the wreckage of their vessel.

“Is there any way we can repair this?” Daron asked Larkin.

“Unfortunately, no. We don’t have enough material or magic to make it fly again.” Larkin said, checking out the miserable remains of their balloon and the enchanted wings that had kept it afloat.

“Perhaps we could ask for assistance, though?” Larkin asked, turning to Penelope.

They had talked to her earlier when she fully woke up and told her they’d met her fairy god mother. Penelope was furious with them for summoning her mother, but she realized it was understandable enough when they were trying to save her, and they couldn’t contact the Danu again.

She shook her head. “I’m sorry, but I can’t keep asking her. I don’t think my powers are strong enough to get this to fly again.”

“All right, okay.” Larkin said, glancing away. “Just wanted to know.”

They stood there a moment, a little awkward with themselves, as they wondered what they should do. Daron glanced out into the distance and then he paused, staring.

“The river. There’s a river near here. Where do you suppose it goes?” Daron asked, turning to Larkin and Penelope.

Larkin shrugged. “Don’t know. It probably snakes through the mountain valleys.”

“Do you have any sort of maps?” Penelope asked him.

Larkin fetched a map and spread it out, showing it to Penelope and Daron. “There aren’t a lot of details. It’s a full scale map of the entire territory.” Larkin said. “We’re up here, I think, and this squiggly line’s the river.”

Daron sighed. “Admittedly it’s not a lot to go on, but at least it looks like the river heads south. It might be a faster way to travel back home instead of walking.”

“Are you going back to the palace?” Penelope asked, turning to him.

“There aren’t a lot of options left. We’ve searched and explored a few areas where the messengers vanished or were waylaid. We know some of what happened to them, and there aren’t any princesses or anyone eligible in those areas. Maybe I should call off my search.” Daron said.

“That’s a relief.” Larkin groaned. “I thought I’d have to convince you to give it up.”

“I’m not that stubborn.” Daron said.

“Fine, then. At least I should get paid when we get there, or sooner, whenever you don’t need me.” Penelope said, turning to them. “Now this boat--”

“Boat?” Larkin said, facing everybody. “Are we going to turn my ship into a boat?”

“We have the tools for it, don’t we? There’s nothing else we can do with this wreckage, and it’d be easier to remake the gondola into a boat than to tear down some trees or walk all the way.” Daron said.

Larkin sighed. “Fine, boat it is, then. I’m not sure how to pilot a boat, but I could probably manage it.
